Hitachi GST release world’s first Deskstar 4TB HDD features, price & review | Hitachi GST hard disk drives

Several days ago, Hitachi Global Storage Technologies formally verified the launch of the world’s first and only internal hard disk drives (HDDs) with 4TB capability. Hitachi GST Deskstar 4TB hard disk drives (model 5K4000) might formally be delivery it’s Deskstar 5K4000 (bare drives and bulk pack) to OEMs, distributors and channel partners globally in Q1 2012.

Hitachi GST has 32MB cache, work with Serial ATA-III (SATA-600) interface and use 4KB superior format. This Deskstar 4TB hard disks utilize CoolSpin technology that guarantees to reduce power usage. Actual spindle speed of CoolSpin-based drives isn’t revealed, but some estimate that it’s 5900rpm.

This CoolSpin technology, together with other Hitachi power management techniques, provides this Deskstar 5K4000 upto a 28% idle power savings more than Deskstar 7K3000 7200rpm drives with an idle acoustic level of only 2.5 bels, based on Hitachi. Nevertheless, hard disks with 5900rpm spindle speed sport greatly lower performance in contrast to those with 7200rpm speed.
